The Carpathian Region Will Become Safer Thanks to Ukrainian-Polish Partnership

A major ecological and infrastructure project, “Environmental Safety – Establishing a Ukrainian-Polish Network for Forest Fire Management in the Carpathian Region,” has been launched in the Ivano-Frankivsk region. This was announced by Svitlana Onyshchuk, Head of the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional State Administration.
Key Project Details
The project is implemented within the Programme Interreg NEXT Poland – Ukraine 2021-2027
The total budget is €5.96 million, including a €3.56 million EU grant for Ukraine.
The initiative is carried out by the Main Department of the State Emergency Service (DSNS) in Ivano-Frankivsk in cooperation with fire and rescue services from the Podkarpackie Voivodeship (Poland), Lviv, Zakarpattia, and Ternopil regions.
Project Goals
Increase ecological and fire safety in the Carpathians;
Adapt the region to the impacts of climate change;
Prevent and respond quickly to forest fires.
What will Ivano-Frankivsk receive?
The initiative provides:
Specialized equipment for forest fire suppression;
A robotic fire extinguishing system and a drone for monitoring;
A modern geographic information system (GIS) for analyzing and tracking fire sites;
The establishment of a state-of-the-art Forest Fire Management Center in the region.
Why It Matters?
The Carpathians are one of Ukraine’s most valuable natural areas. Due to climate change, the risk of large-scale forest fires increases every year. Thanks to international cooperation and EU support, the region will gain innovative tools for protection and rapid response, helping to preserve ecosystems and improve safety for residents.
