The situation at the water intake of Verkhovyna's municipal water utility has been officially declared a local-level emergency. The decision was made in response to low water levels and the critical state of the community's water supply.
On 17 July, the Verkhovyna City Council held an extraordinary meeting of the Commission on Technogenic and Environmental Safety and Emergency Situations.
The commission reviewed appeals from local residents and a letter from the Verkhovyna Water Supply and Sewerage Utility regarding the critical water supply situation in the settlement.
Following the meeting, the commission unanimously decided to declare the situation at the utility's water intake a local-level emergency caused by low water levels.
The Head of the Housing and Utilities Department of the Verkhovyna City Council was instructed to prepare the necessary project documentation and submit the funding proposal to the council's budget committee.
The community will also appeal to the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional State Administration and the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Council to seek co-financing for the required works.
A day earlier, on 16 July, the Verkhovyna Settlement Council had separately announced a temporary restriction of water supply due to heavy rainfall and increased water turbidity. Residents were advised to store an adequate supply of water.
Thus, the official statements issued over two consecutive days addressed different factors: a temporary deterioration in water quality following intense rainfall and, the following day, a critical situation at the water intake, officially linked to low water levels.
At the same time, the published statements do not explain how these two circumstances are related or what specific technical problems affected the water intake. Further details on the causes of the emergency and the planned engineering measures have not yet been made public.
