The NGO “Ecosphere” has identified 19 contenders for the national selection to participate in the international competition “European Tree of the Year.”
Everyone is invited to take part in the voting, but only unique votes will be counted to ensure a fair process.
Ukraine joined the contest only recently but has already achieved remarkable results:
- 2023: The Colony Apple Tree from Krolevets, Sumy region — over 220 years old — took 3rd place with more than 14,000 votes.
- 2024: The Millennium Oak from the village of Veryn in Lviv region ranked 8th with around 9,000 votes.
- 2025: The White Acacia — Witness of Seven Generations, a tree that has “lived” under six different states, placed 6th with nearly 17,000 votes.
Among this year’s nominees is a true natural gem from the Ivano-Frankivsk region — the “Twelve Months Beech.” The “Twelve Months Beech” — a Symbol of Unity and the Power of Nature
In the heart of the primeval forests of the Horgany Nature Reserve, within the Pasichna territorial community, grows an extraordinary tree — the Beech of the Twelve Months.
This tree has twelve trunks that have grown together into a single whole, forming a living symbol of the unity of time and generations.
Each of its twelve trunks symbolizes a month of the year — from the quiet of January to the warmth of July and the calm reflection of December. Together they form the circle of life, without beginning or end,” say local residents
The tree stands 17.3 meters tall, with a trunk circumference of 4.56 meters.
From afar, it appears as one massive beech, but upon closer look, you can see twelve individual trunks that have fused into a single living organism.
Surrounding the tree grow Lunaria rediviva — a relict plant that remembers the Ice Age, Clematis alpina — a rare alpine vine, and several species of ferns, adding to the area’s atmosphere of harmony and tranquility.
This beech has become the green heart of the “Hrehoty Horgany” educational trail, offering not only shade and oxygen but also a profound sense of the passage of time living alongside us.
“We hope that the story of this tree will resonate across Europe as a symbol of unity, natural strength, and Hutsul heritage,” emphasize representatives of the NGO “Nadbistrytska Hutsulshchyna” — Tamara Kundelska, Roman Kuznetsov, and Olha Melnyk.
