Youth Public Environmental Organization “Our Home – Manyava” has prepared a new analytical article about the Bystrytsia Nadvirnianska River and the challenges related to protecting the mountain rivers of the Precarpathian region.
The article was prompted by public discussion around plans to develop three small hydropower facilities in the Pasichna community. Following an active response from local residents, the public, and environmental organizations, the initiator withdrew the submitted projects, and the planned public hearings were canceled.
The article explains why the Bystrytsia Nadvirnianska River is important for the water system of the Precarpathian region, what risks small hydropower plants may pose to mountain rivers, how the extraction of sand and gravel mixtures affects the riverbed, and why the Emerald Network, the Carpathian Convention, River Basin Management Plans, and open environmental data are important.
Particular attention is given to how local interventions in the river can intensify the impacts of climate change, as well as to energy solutions that can strengthen community resilience without destroying free-flowing mountain rivers.
The material also provides practical recommendations for communities, residents, and responsible businesses on transparent planning, public oversight, river monitoring, and preserving the natural resilience of aquatic ecosystems.
