Pesticides and Persistent Organic Pollutants Detected in the Dniester River Basin

In June 2026, the Water Monitoring Laboratory of the Western Region of the Dniester Basin Water Resources Authority assessed the quality of surface waters across the Dniester River Basin as part of Ukraine's State Water Monitoring Programme.
The monitoring results showed that most of the analysed parameters complied with environmental quality standards. However, elevated concentrations of several herbicides, insecticides and other organic pollutants were detected in a number of rivers.
The highest exceedances were recorded in the Liadova River, where concentrations of the herbicide terbuthylazine exceeded the environmental quality standard by approximately 38 times, while metolachlor exceeded the standard by more than 16 times.
"Water monitoring is one of the key tools for assessing the state of the environment. Monitoring data should be published regularly—at least once a month. It is also important to expand monitoring beyond existing observation stations and include small river catchments", said Mykola Skydaniuk, Head of the Youth Public Environmental Organization "Our Home – Manyava."
