The Commission on Sustainable Use and Protection of the Dniester River Basin (the Dniester Commission) held its first meeting in 2025

The participants of the meeting discussed several important issues, including, first of all, the Dniester River Basin Management Plan for 2025-2030, approved by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine on November 1, 2024, No. 1078-p, which will be implemented as early as January 1, 2025. Oleh Mandryk, Chairman of the Dniester Commission, noted that the Commission's main task is to facilitate the implementation of river basin management plans. The members of the basin council emphasized the need to ensure interaction with local executive authorities and local governments within their competence to include the Dniester River Basin Management Plan measures in short- and medium-term planning documents, target programs, and other documents for their implementation.
Also, Kateryna Mudra, an expert from Blue Rivers Environmental Consulting, presented to the members of the basin council a publication on the Dniester River Basin Management Plan, developed under the EU4 Environment Water and Data project, which can be used in the future to promote the approved RBMP and in the implementation of the action program.
During the meeting, the participants were briefed on the results of the state water monitoring program and the assessment of the quality of surface water bodies in the Dniester River basin in 2024.
Another critical issue on the agenda was discussing and considering proposals for the 2025 Water Protection Action Plan for the Dniester River Basin. Representatives of the Dniester Basin Water Resources Administration and Council within the Dniester Basin presented proposals for the 2025 Water Protection Action Plan, which are proposed to be funded from the state budget. The Council unanimously supported the proposals.
At the end of the meeting, the participants approved the Dniester Commission's work plan for 2025.
Also during the meeting, Svitlana Slesarenok, a member of the Dniester Commission and Chair of the Coordination Council of the Black Sea Women's Club, spoke about her participation in a panel discussion at COP29 in the Ukrainian pavilion. This year's COP-29 took place from November 11 to 22, 2024, in Baku, Azerbaijan, under the title Empowering Climate Action through Ambition, Implementation, and Inclusiveness.
