Director of organization Mykola Skydaniuk took part in the event “Mountain Biodiversity 2002-2022: achievements and next challenges at global and regional level” organized by Alpine and Carpathian Conventions and the Mountain Partnership.
The main purpose of the event was to contribute in implementing the UN resolution on International Mountain Year, raising awareness of the importance of the protection of mountain ecosystem, with a focus on mountain biodiversity and climate change issues, providing an overview of the main achievements of the past years at global and regional level, and discussing the main challenges and the way forward.
In the past twenty years several important milestones have been achieved, but new challenges and threats for the mountain ecosystems emerged due to climatic and anthropic pressures, which require an accurate knowledge of the mountain biodiversity to adopt effective and measures, to strengthen climate-resilient sustainable mountain development.
The Alpine and Carpathian Conventions and the Mountain Partnership have been playing an essential role in increasing public awareness and in advancing protection and sustainable development in the mountain regions, as well as in supporting transboundary governance, promoting cooperation and the establishment of knowledge networks.
